# Your own AI server with GPU: buy, rent or use the cloud, and who maintains it

Having your own AI on a GPU server is the most direct way to keep your data from being mixed with anyone else's. You can buy it and set it up in the office, or rent it already set up in Europe or in your office. In both cases, someone has to look after it. We explain what is needed, which option fits each case and what work is involved.

More and more companies ask whether they can have “their own AI” in the office. They can. The useful question is not whether it can be done, but what is needed for it to work well on the first day and still be working a year from now.

## Why have an AI server in your own office?

There are three common reasons:

- **Data does not leave your network.** Documents, queries and answers stay on your machine.
- **Control.** You decide which model you use, when it is updated and who has access.
- **Predictable cost.** You pay for the equipment and its maintenance, not for every query.

In exchange, you get the power you buy, and the equipment has to be looked after. For many companies, it is enough to have the data on their own server and the AI outside, on a dedicated GPU in Europe. We cover this below.

## What do you need to set it up?

- **A GPU with enough memory.** It is the part that does the AI work. What matters most is its memory: the model has to fit in it.
- **The rest of the server up to the job.** System memory, a fast disk for the models and documents, and a power supply that can handle the GPU.
- **A suitable place.** A machine with a GPU gets hot, makes noise and uses power. Better in a ventilated room than under a desk, and with an uninterruptible power supply.
- **Network.** Connected to the office network, with access only from inside or through an encrypted connection.
- **Software.** The system, the GPU drivers, the program that serves the model and the chosen models.

## What GPU do I need for an AI server?

It depends on two things: which model you want to use and how many people will use it at the same time. A larger model needs more GPU memory; more people at once need more headroom. There is no one-size-fits-all answer, and be wary of anyone who gives you one without asking what you are going to do.

The sensible approach is to start with the task: reading invoices, answering with your documents, drafting or summarising calls do not require the same thing. From there you choose the model and, with the model, the GPU. If in doubt, it is more sensible to try first on a rented GPU than to buy more than you need.

## Buy the server or rent it?

Both options make sense. If rented, the server can be in a European data centre or in your own office:

| | Bought, in your office | Rented, in Europe |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Where the data is | On your network | On a server dedicated to you, in Europe |
| Initial investment | You buy the equipment | You buy nothing |
| If it falls short | The equipment has to be expanded or replaced | The GPU is changed |
| Maintenance | You arrange it separately or your team handles it | Can be included in the rental |
| Noise, heat and breakdowns | In your office | They are not your problem |

There is also a middle ground: your data on a server in your office and the AI on a GPU elsewhere. This is what we at BionicAdri call hybrid mode.

## Who maintains an AI server?

This is the part that is most often forgotten. An AI server needs:

- **Updates** for the system and security, without breaking what works.
- **GPU drivers** up to date and compatible with the program that serves the models.
- **Models kept up to date:** better versions come out and it is worth testing them before switching.
- **Monitoring:** knowing whether the service responds, whether the disk is filling up or whether the GPU is overheating, and acting before someone is left without AI.
- **Backups** of the configuration and documents.
- **Access:** who logs in, from where and with what permissions.

If your business has an IT team with the time, they can do it. If not, it is better to arrange it from the start than to find out with the first failure.

## What usually goes wrong

- Buying the GPU before knowing which model is going to be used.
- Installing it, getting it to work, and not touching it again until it stops working.
- Leaving it open to the internet when there is no need.
- Not testing it with real tasks from the business before approving it.

## How we do it at BionicAdri

In addition to ADRI and the platform, we work with GPU AI servers every day, starting with our own. That's why we offer both options: if you buy the server, we install it and, if you want, we maintain it (updates, monitoring and repairs); if you prefer not to buy anything, we rent it to you already set up, with private AI running and maintenance and updates included, on our servers in Europe or in your office. The process is the same as any custom project: we study your case, propose the equipment, model and location, install it and test it with your tasks.

You can find it explained in [Custom AI for businesses](https://bionicadri.com/en/ia-a-medida-empresas.html). If you want it to answer with your documents, see [Custom RAG for businesses](https://bionicadri.com/en/blog/rag-para-empresas.html). ## Frequently asked questions

**How much does an AI server for a business cost?**

It depends on the model, how many people use it at the same time and whether you buy or rent it. That's why it is quoted individually: we give you the figure before you decide anything.

**Can I use a standard computer as an AI server?**

For testing, sometimes yes. For a team to use it every day, you need a GPU with enough memory for the model and a machine prepared to work non-stop.

**Do I need an internet connection?**

To use the AI, no: it can run only within your network. To update and maintain it remotely, an encrypted connection is needed, which can be limited to those tasks.

**Who maintains the server?**

If you rent it from us, maintenance and updates are included. If you buy it, you can contract maintenance with us or handle it with your IT team.
